GaDOE will begin presenting John Hancock Award banners to schools during Constitution Week, observed September 17-23. The award honors elementary, middle, and high schools whose students demonstrate proficiency in cursive writing. This skill supports literacy and writing fluency while enabling students to read historic documents in their original form.
During the 2025-2026 school year, 630 schools earned John Hancock recognition. Of those, 323 schools received the John Hancock Banner and Ribbon of Distinction, while 307 schools earned the John Hancock Banner and Proficiency Ribbon.
"Constitution Week allows our students to engage directly with the words, ideas, and principles that shape our nation," State School Superintendent Richard Woods said. "Through the John Hancock Award, the distribution of pocket Constitutions, and the thoughtful celebrations taking place in schools and communities, we are helping students understand that our founding documents are not simply pieces of history — they remain central to our identity as Americans. I am proud of the schools and educators bringing that history to life for Georgia students."

The Brooks County Public Library hosted a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on Monday, September 14th to honor Larry Cunningham and family. The Cunningham family generously donated funds to renovate one of the Library’s Conference Rooms. The “Cunningham Room” renovations included painting, new chairs, rejuvenated conference table, and numerous additions of framed prints and Brooks County documents. The room is a testament to the generosity and long-standing support of the Cunningham family, as well as a wonderful representation of the rich history of Brooks County.
DaVonna Milton, BCHS Senior, completed the ACE Electric AMPED Summer Internship in the field of Engineering and Fabrication Division with a graduation held on July 27th.
The AMPED program introduces high school and college students to the electrical construction industry through hands-on experience, jobsite exposure, safety training, mentorship, and opportunities to learn from experienced professionals. Students gain a better understanding of the skills, responsibilities, and career pathways available within the electrical trade while developing workplace habits that can help prepare them for future employment. The program was a paid internship and involved an application process, recommendations and interviews.The program was recognized by the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) as the 2023 National Business Partner of the Year!
The graduation celebrated students who successfully completed the company’s summer internship program and demonstrated dedication, professionalism, and a strong interest in the electrical trade. Each participant received an award in front of family members, high school career and technical education teachers, and the Ace employees, mentors, and supporters who helped guide them throughout the summer. Only 11 students were selected to participate at the Valdosta location this summer and they noted “the selection was tough due to the quantity and great quality of students this year.”
DaVonna was the only female intern student selected at the Valdosta location and was hired at ACE Electric following her internship. She is currently employed as a Work-Based Learning student at ACE Monday to Thursday each week.

These quick, non-invasive screenings help identify potential hearing or vision concerns that could affect a student's learning and participation in the classroom. If a concern is identified during your child's screening, a follow-up letter will be sent home with additional information.

If you do not want your child to participate, please contact your child's school nurse at least 24 hours BEFORE the scheduled screening and verbally request to opt out.
